Description

This piece focused primarily on the depictions of women throughout time by juxtaposing imagery from porn (present) into a more classical context (past). I wanted to focus on the relationship between the art and the viewer, and how the gaze of the art impacts this relationship. In the case of Vermeer's portraits, the woman looks towards the viewer with a calculated charm. Within the context of nudes, the woman's nudeness serves as clothing, wanting to be seen, even despite a male being present she looks towards the audience. The model's effortlessness and lack of action exerts submission to the viewer, a sense of possession, which is inherent to the principle of the male commissioning the painting for his own viewing pleasure. Through my piece, I explore these ideas through porn, a modern depiction of women made for the male viewer, and the relationship shared between them.
